I'm the Older Brother
Tony Campolo confesses to being the older brother in the parable of the prodigal son:
Jesus tells how this older brother is filled with resentment, and complains that he had worked hard on his father’s farm for many years, and now, the money that he had helped earn for his father was being spent on this younger brother who had wasted the family’s wealth.
Grace is annoying because it is reckless. God loves everyone and wants to share that love with him. It pisses us off and seems unfair. Except that grace, by its very nature, is not fair.
Fair is the Law.
Fair is getting an honest day’s wages for an honest day’s work.
Grace is like winning the lottery.
A lottery that everyone wins if only they play.
