Jeff Anderson, a vice president at Crown Financial Ministries, a nonprofit organization that develops financial-planning programs worldwide, says the group’s money-and-Jesus materials reached 141 percent more people in the past fiscal year than in the previous one. Four million people a week listen to the financial-advice show hosted by Christian radio personality Dave Ramsey, who also appears on the Fox Business Network and has written three New York Times best-sellers. And “prosperity theology”—based on the belief that God offers financial help to the faithful—is espoused by many evangelists, most notably Joel Osteen.
Understanding that it was the author of the article who used the terms and not necessarily the leaders of the organizations themselves, I get very nervous when I read about “money-and-Jesus” and “prosperity theology.”
Frankly, I get nervous when I see or hear “Jesus and…” anything.
