To Comment or Not to Comment

Not everyone wants to spend time running their blog like a night club. Some people just want to, you know, write.

Neven Mrgan on the comments vs. no comments debate that seems to be coming up more often lately.

It depends on the site, but for a site where the main purpose is posting articles or essays, comments don’t seem to make much sense to me. Imagine you are reading a book of essays and notes from other people are scribbled all over the page — some genuinely useful, others just obnoxious. “It automatically puts you, the reader, in a defensive mode where you’re saying, ‘What’s good in this comment thread? What can I skim?’” (John Gruber)

I wish I spent more time writing, but I am definitely glad I don’t have to spend time moderating and patrolling comments. Then I would do even less writing than I do already.
